Senior Scam Awareness Seminar Held in Palm Desert Amid Rising Fraud Losses

Scams targeting seniors are becoming an increasing concern nationwide, with nearly $700 million lost to fraud last year alone. In response, Assembly Member Greg Wallace hosted a Senior Scam Awareness Seminar at the Palm Desert Community Center, aimed at helping older residents protect themselves.

The event brought together local experts, law enforcement, and consumer protection agencies to educate attendees on common scams, from identity theft to Medicare fraud. Organizers stressed the importance of staying alert and cautious, particularly when dealing with unsolicited phone calls, emails, or online requests for personal information.

According to the FBI, more than 147,000 fraud complaints involving seniors were filed last year, totaling nearly $5 billion in losses.

“The key takeaway is to be vigilant about what you’re doing,” one presenter advised. “Be cautious when answering the phone and be wary of who you’re talking to. If you don’t know them, don’t answer.”

Residents are encouraged to report suspected financial elder abuse or submit complaints through the contact information provided during the seminar.
