Americans Report Record Low Alcohol Consumption, Poll Finds
American alcohol consumption has dropped to its lowest level in decades, according to new polling data that reveals shifting attitudes toward drinking and health.
A recent Gallup poll found that just 54% of Americans report consuming alcohol, marking a significant decline in drinking habits nationwide. The survey provides insight into both consumption patterns and changing perceptions about alcohol's health effects.
Among Americans who do drink, consumption patterns vary widely. Twenty-four percent reported having consumed alcohol within the past 24 hours, while 40% said it had been more than a week since their last drink. This 40% figure represents the highest proportion of infrequent drinkers Gallup has recorded since 2000.
The poll also revealed a notable shift in health perceptions. For the first time in Gallup's tracking, a majority of Americans now believe that consuming even one or two alcoholic drinks per day is harmful to health.
