CVUSD Board Meeting Draws Opposition to 106 Employee Layoffs
The Coachella Valley Unified School District board meeting on Thursday drew a packed audience, with many attendees voicing opposition to the layoffs of 106 district employees.
Budget Crisis Triggers Cuts
The layoffs stem from CVUSD's elimination of an estimated $60 million budget shortfall announced earlier this year. The cuts have mainly targeted classified staff positions—non-teaching roles throughout the district.
Union Calls Layoffs Illegal
The classified staff union representing the affected employees, California School Employees Association, has characterized the layoffs as an illegal transfer of duties, raising concerns about the impact on school operations.
Library Services Eliminated
Among the most significant cuts are instructional media assistants who manage school libraries. These positions have been completely eliminated according to the union, meaning students will lose access to:
School libraries and book checkout services
Textbook distribution and curriculum materials
Library-based educational support
The union warned that without these staff members, students "will not have access to the library, will not have access to reading, will not have full access to the curriculum."
Employee Frustration
Long-time district employee Sergio Duran, who has worked for CVUSD for nearly 31 years, expressed frustration at the board meeting.
"I'm sick and tired of this going on over and over and over decade after decade," Duran said. "Nobody ever gets held accountable. And people behind me have paid that price with their jobs for overpaid people in this school district."
District Response Pending
CVUSD has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the layoffs or the union's allegations.
