Demonstrators Rally Nationwide Against Trump-Backed Redistricting Plans

Demonstrations unfolded across the United States on Saturday as thousands gathered to oppose Trump-backed redistricting proposals that critics argue threaten fair representation. More than 200 events were held in 34 states, from parks and coffee shops to capitols and churches, under the unifying message: “Stop the Trump takeover.”

The largest gathering took place in Austin, Texas, where over 1,000 people crowded outside the state Capitol. Demonstrators carried signs reading “Put Texans First” and “Compassion Over Cruelty,” while chanting “This is what democracy looks like” and “Sí se puede.” The rally featured performances and speeches from prominent voices including former Congressman Beto O’Rourke, labor leader Dolores Huerta, Democratic Representatives Greg Casar and Lloyd Doggett, and local activists.

Casar criticized Trump’s deportation campaign, while Doggett warned against the president’s use of the National Guard, saying “we need national guard rails on a lawless president.” O’Rourke accused Republicans of redistricting to avoid accountability, and Huerta urged attendees to organize politically, declaring, “When we organize, we win.”

The protests were sparked by a proposed congressional map in Texas, backed by Trump, that could net Republicans five additional seats in the 2026 midterm elections. Democratic leaders across the country argue that such changes would weaken the voting power of communities of color.

While Texas served as the epicenter of Saturday’s demonstrations, rallies stretched nationwide. Protesters gathered in New York’s Central Park, Washington, D.C., and across states such as Ohio, Missouri, and Florida. Events included rallies, teach-ins, banner drops, and art-making projects.

The protests drew support from the Democratic National Committee and organizations including Planned Parenthood, the Working Families Party, and the Human Rights Campaign. Organizers emphasized nonviolence and called the movement part of a larger effort to protect democracy.

“Though this fight started in Texas, it doesn’t end here,” said Drucilla Tigner, executive director of the Texas For All coalition. “This isn’t just about redistricting or one state’s politics. It’s about the future of our democracy.”
