Analysis: Zelensky Meeting Highlights How White House Remade Press Corps to Trump’s Liking

The Trump White House’s effort to reshape the press corps was on full display during Monday’s Oval Office photo op with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Veteran correspondents privately fumed as pro-Trump media figures dominated the brief Q&A, giving the president friendly prompts and few difficult questions.

For decades, the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) rotated the small “pool” of reporters allowed into tightly constrained events. But in February, the administration took control of pool assignments, gaining leverage to seat explicitly pro-Trump outlets. Monday’s pool featured conservative organizations like Fox News, Breitbart, and the Washington Examiner, while wire services were excluded.

Fox’s Peter Doocy asked five questions. Another conspicuous presence: Brian Glenn of Real America’s Voice—who wasn’t assigned to the pool but was allowed in by aides. Glenn, who previously criticized Zelensky’s attire during a February visit, opened by complimenting the Ukrainian leader’s black suit, prompting banter with Trump.

Glenn then teed up broader talking points, asking whether the “American media” opposes a peace deal—launching a multi-minute Trump monologue about media bias and public safety. Trump later returned to Glenn to discuss eliminating mail-in ballots and voting machines, an off-topic prompt that triggered another extended riff touching on elections, crime, and immigration.

Some correspondents called the episode “embarrassing,” arguing many questions were designed to flatter Trump rather than elicit answers. Former Obama White House official Johanna Maska noted on social media that partisan voices were steering the session despite the stakes of the Zelensky meeting.

The administration’s revamped pool process has fueled concerns about access and accountability, as carefully selected questioners shape televised moments with foreign leaders and limit opportunities for probing follow-ups.
