Major Coachella Valley Construction Projects for the Week of August 18th
As the "summer of construction" continues across the Coachella Valley, several major road projects are impacting traffic this week. Here's what drivers need to know to avoid delays and plan alternate routes.
Palm Desert: Cook Street Waterline Project
Location: Cook Street between Shell Drive and Hovely Lane (near the high school wash area)
Impact: Changing lane conditions requiring close attention to road signage. Side street traffic may create additional congestion.
Alternate Routes: Use Portola Avenue or Washington Street
Timeline: Expected through mid-September
Major Valley-Wide Projects
Two significant construction efforts are creating the biggest traffic impacts across the region:
Highway 111 Project
The Highway 111 improvement project is operating double shifts and working nights to accelerate completion. Originally scheduled through November, the project is now expected to finish early due to extended work hours. Traffic signals are switched to red flash mode in late afternoon to accommodate night crews.
Indian Wells Miles/Washington Widening
This major road improvement project runs parallel to the Highway 111 work, creating a significant traffic corridor challenge.
Best Alternate Route: Fred Waring Drive (recommended over Miles Avenue, which will see increased congestion when schools resume)
North-South Alternative: Use Jefferson Street, then connect to Portola Avenue (avoid Cook Street)
Palm Springs: Bridge Construction
Location: Bridge construction area with wash access
This Week's Impact: Additional flaggers will be present during early morning hours as crews move dirt and materials for repaving and re-leveling work on one side of the bridge.
Alternate Route: Ballardo Road (accessed via Mesquite Avenue on the south side and Sunny Dunes Road on the north side)
Timeline: Long-term project continuing for several more months
