Summer Travel with Pets: Is Your Furry Friend Ready for the Journey?
Summer and holiday travel often include the entire family—but that doesn't always mean your pets should come along for the ride.
Before booking a flight or packing up the car, it’s essential to consider whether your dog or cat is truly ready for travel. While the idea of bringing a furry companion on vacation can be appealing, not every animal is suited for the stresses and challenges of life on the road—or in the air.
Dr. Ezra Ameis, a Los Angeles-based emergency veterinarian and founder of Paw Priority in West Hollywood, says pet owners should carefully assess their animal's temperament, health, and behavior before making any travel plans. Some pets experience anxiety, motion sickness, or disorientation in unfamiliar environments, which can turn a fun trip into a stressful ordeal for both the animal and the owner.
If your pet is cleared for travel, preparation is key. Essential items include a secure and comfortable carrier, food and water bowls, enough food for the entire trip, any necessary medications, a favorite toy or blanket for familiarity, and proper identification tags or microchip information. A travel-specific checklist can help prevent forgetting something important, especially during busy departure days.
Many pet owners consider using medication or calming supplements to ease travel stress. While options like CBD have gained popularity, Dr. Ameis emphasizes the importance of consulting a veterinarian before giving your pet any form of treatment. There are safe and effective options available, but dosage and suitability vary based on the pet’s size, breed, and health history.
For some animals, staying behind is the better option. Whether it’s due to age, medical needs, or anxiety, boarding facilities or trusted pet sitters can offer a safer and more comfortable alternative. In some cases, keeping your pet in a familiar environment is the most compassionate choice.
Traveling with pets can be a wonderful experience, but it requires planning, awareness, and consideration for your pet’s specific needs. With the right approach, you can make the best decision for both your vacation and your furry friend’s well-being.
