Weekend Workout with David Lyons: Contraction Training for Stronger Legs

It’s Saturday, and that means it’s time for another Weekend Workout with David Lyons on NBC Palm Springs. This week, Lyons focuses on day two of contraction training, guiding viewers through a series of leg-strengthening exercises designed to build muscle and endurance.

The first move of the session is the squat. Demonstrated by Charlene, the exercise begins with feet shoulder-width apart and dumbbells held at the sides. After squatting down with a straight back, she rises without fully locking her knees, holding a bent position for four seconds. This sustained contraction targets the glutes, hamstrings, and quadriceps. Each set includes 10 repetitions.

Next is the good morning exercise. Standing with dumbbells in hand, Charlene bends forward slightly with knees soft, stretching through the hamstrings and glutes before returning to the upright position. At the top, she stops just short of standing tall, maintaining a slight bend and squeezing her hamstrings and glutes for four seconds. This combination of stretch and contraction makes the movement highly effective for the posterior chain.

The final exercise of leg day is the calf raise. Charlene positions herself on a box to allow a deeper stretch in her calves. She then presses up onto her toes as high as possible, holding the contraction for four seconds before lowering back into the stretch. Like the previous exercises, the set consists of 10 repetitions.

Lyons emphasized that contraction training maximizes muscle activation by holding the tension at the peak of each movement. With legs complete, he teased that the next Weekend Workout will shift focus to arms and abs.
