FDA Issues Warning on Walmart Shrimp Over Possible Radioactive Contamination

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to consumers about select lots of Walmart’s Great Value brand raw frozen shrimp after possible radioactive contamination was detected.

The concern centers on three specific lots of shrimp, sold in 13 states, with a best-by date of March 15, 2027. At this time, California is not on the list of affected states. Consumers in impacted states are urged to throw away the shrimp if they have purchased it.

The potential contamination involves cesium-137, a radioactive isotope that, when repeatedly ingested in low doses, may increase the risk of cancer. U.S. Customs and Border Protection first raised the alarm when C-137 was detected in shipping containers at four U.S. ports.

The FDA emphasizes that no shrimp currently in the U.S. food supply has tested positive for contamination. However, as a precaution, the agency is recommending a recall of all products from the company that were shipped after the affected containers tested positive.

Consumers concerned about their purchases should check packaging details and discard any shrimp matching the recalled lots. The FDA continues to monitor the situation closely and says additional updates will follow as testing continues.
