Undocumented Student Roberto Ramos Finds Strength in Education and Leadership at College of the Desert
NBC Palm Springs is highlighting the story of Roberto Ramos, an undocumented immigrant student who continues to pursue his education despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.
For Ramos, daily life as a student is filled with more than just the usual challenges of coursework. He lives with the constant fear of deportation. “With the current political climate, there’s a lot on my mind all the time,” Ramos explained. “I don’t know whether I can do certain things or visit certain places.”
Though he carries the weight of this uncertainty, Ramos sees education as his path forward. As the only member of his family without immigration protection, he represents thousands of students who do not qualify for DACA due to their length of time in the United States. For him, the added responsibility of helping support his family only adds to the pressure.
Even so, Ramos has remained focused on his goals. After enduring personal hardships, he chose to change his career path to sociology, inspired by those who supported him during difficult times. “I realized that I was given a lot of help and I want to return that help,” Ramos said.
Now in his final year at College of the Desert, he has taken on a leadership role as vice president of Associated Students. He hopes his example will inspire others who may feel unrepresented, emphasizing the importance of community and support. “We all have our own problems in life, but if we can find that support and family, we can make it through,” Ramos said.
Looking ahead, Ramos plans to continue his education at either the University of California, Irvine, or UC Santa Barbara. For him, the journey is about more than just personal success—it is also about giving back to the community and paving the way for others in similar situations.
