Cathedral City Senior Center Hosts Ice Cream Social to Beat the Heat and Loneliness
What may have seemed like a simple ice cream social at the Cathedral City Senior Center turned out to be much more—a chance for seniors to cool off, connect, and combat loneliness.
The event, which offered ice cream with plenty of toppings, was held to celebrate volunteers and members while also providing a space for the community to gather during a summer heat wave. The center emphasized that events like this bring more than just a sweet treat—they bring smiles, laughter, and connection at a time when many older adults can feel isolated.
“At an older age, getting to meet new friends is not easy,” said Marge Wade, who attended the event. “It is harder for some people, but I think there are others who are willing to get out, but they have no way of getting out. So they don’t take the bus or they don’t drive. So it’s a very difficult thing for older people to get out.”
The afternoon also featured games, prizes, and information about resources available to seniors, including mental health programs such as the PEARLS program, which offers therapeutic problem-solving support for those struggling with isolation, depression, or anxiety.
Organizers say the event not only provides joy but also helps foster trust among seniors, encouraging them to seek out help when needed. The next ice cream social is scheduled for September 17, giving the community another chance to come together and enjoy both the treats and the company.
