Pam Bondi Reasserts Control Over Justice Department After Epstein Files Fallout

Pam Bondi, facing weeks of backlash over her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, is reasserting her authority at the Justice Department and reinforcing her position as attorney general.

Bondi, who had largely stepped back from public appearances after the uproar, resurfaced this week by naming Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey to serve alongside Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino. The move, according to administration officials, is a clear signal that Bondi has strengthened her influence while Bongino’s future at the FBI may be in question.

The controversy stemmed from a July 7 memo stating Epstein died by suicide and scaling back promised investigative file releases. The unsigned memo angered Trump’s MAGA base, with some influencers demanding Bondi’s firing. For nearly a month, Bondi avoided media appearances after struggling to shift attention away from the issue.

In recent days, however, Bondi has returned to Fox News, where she focused on President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of Washington, DC’s police force. Notably, the interviews did not touch on the Epstein controversy, which allies say shows she has weathered the worst of the political storm.

Bondi’s decision to bring Bailey into the FBI is viewed as both an expansion of Trump-loyalist influence and a warning sign for Bongino, who previously clashed with Bondi over the handling of the Epstein files. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt insisted Bailey’s addition was about strengthening leadership, not sidelining Bongino.

Still, challenges remain. House Republicans have subpoenaed the FBI’s Epstein investigative files, and Democrats are preparing to press the issue in upcoming hearings. Despite the criticism, Bondi’s close alignment with Trump and willingness to aggressively defend his agenda appear to have solidified her standing within the administration.
