Study Finds Reading for Pleasure Down 40% in 20 Years, But Romance and Mystery Books Are Rising

A new study published in the journal iScience reveals that reading for pleasure among Americans has dropped sharply over the last two decades. Between 2003 and 2023, time spent reading for enjoyment fell by about 40%, with researchers noting a steady decline of roughly 3% each year.

The study points to changing habits in entertainment and technology as contributing factors. Streaming services, video games, and social media are capturing more of Americans’ free time, leaving less space for traditional leisure reading.

Despite the overall decline, some genres are experiencing growth. Romantic fantasy novels are increasingly popular, with series-driven storytelling attracting a younger audience. Similarly, mystery books remain in demand, showing resilience in a market where many other genres are losing readers.

Experts say the rise of these categories may reflect cultural shifts, with romance and fantasy offering escapism, while mystery continues to deliver suspense and problem-solving that readers crave.

The findings highlight how leisure reading is evolving rather than disappearing entirely. While overall numbers are falling, dedicated fan bases in specific genres continue to keep the publishing industry engaged.
