Friday Night Lights: Rancho Mirage Opens High School Football Season Against Christian Patriots

High school football is officially underway in the Coachella Valley, and all eyes are on Rancho Mirage High School as the Rattlers take the field tonight against the Christian Patriots from El Cajon.

The matchup marks the start of the season for the Rattlers, who enter 2025 as the number-one ranked team in the Valley. With a senior-heavy roster, strong leadership, and high expectations, Rancho Mirage is considered a favorite to make a deep playoff run this year.

Head Coach Isaiah Matthews says one of his top priorities is keeping his team grounded despite the hype. “With expectations this high, we have to stay disciplined, play our brand of football, and take it one week at a time,” he said.

Fans will be watching standout player Jeremiah Johnson, who already has league MVP buzz before the season’s first kickoff. Johnson, along with fellow top prospect Noah Hook, is featured on the Desert Sun’s preseason Top 10 list of players to watch.

But tonight’s challenge is far from an easy start. The Patriots from Christian High School went 4-0 in league play last year and compete in one of the tougher conferences in San Diego County. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Rancho Mirage High School.

In addition to the excitement on the field, NBC Palm Springs Sports Desk’s Tim O’Brien and Caitlyn Kelley also highlighted a big honor for one of their own. Gino Lamont, producer and host of Hockey Night Coachella Valley, has been awarded the prestigious James H. Ellery Award for excellence in minor league hockey broadcasting.

“It’s so well-deserved,” said O’Brien. “Gino puts everything he has into the show, and we’re thrilled to see him recognized for it.”
