Hurricane Erin Moves Away From East Coast but Still Brings Coastal Flooding and Rip Currents

Hurricane Erin is moving away from the United States after skirting close to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but the storm continues to deliver dangerous conditions along more than 1,000 miles of the East Coast.

The massive Category 2 hurricane, which reached Category 5 strength over the weekend, stirred up life-threatening rip currents, rough surf, and significant flooding without ever making landfall. Its closest approach came Wednesday night when it passed just 200 miles from the Outer Banks, flooding highways, eroding beaches, and damaging dunes.

Evacuations were ordered earlier this week for parts of Hatteras and Ocracoke islands, where over 2,200 people and 1,100 cars were ferried to safety. By Thursday morning, North Carolina’s Highway 12 was closed due to sand, water, and debris. Crews are now working to reopen the vital roadway, though no timeline has been set.

Erin’s size remains a concern, with tropical storm-force winds stretching nearly 575 miles from end to end. The National Weather Service has issued marine warnings from Florida to Maine, with tropical storm warnings still in effect for parts of North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland.

Flooding risks remain elevated, with some of the worst conditions expected during Thursday evening’s high tide cycles. Officials warn that parts of southern New Jersey and Delaware could also experience major flooding. More than 70 people have already been rescued from rip currents in North Carolina this week, and officials continue to urge caution along the entire coast.

The hurricane is expected to weaken as it accelerates north into the Atlantic and could downgrade to a tropical storm by Sunday. Still, many East Coast beaches remain under swimming restrictions, and elevated rip current risks will persist into the weekend.
