One Dead After Drowning in Indio Canal, Investigation Underway
A person has died following a drowning incident in the Indio Canal late Thursday morning, authorities confirmed.
According to the Indio Police Department, the report came in around 11:30 a.m. near Avenue 44, just west of Dillon Road. Responding officers requested the assistance of the Riverside County Sheriff’s dive team, which was deployed to help recover the body from the canal.
Details remain limited at this time. Police have not released the name of the victim or circumstances that led to the drowning. Investigators are working to determine how the individual ended up in the water.
The Indio Canal, a man-made waterway that runs through parts of the Coachella Valley, has been the site of previous safety concerns. With swift currents and steep embankments, authorities frequently caution residents and visitors to avoid entering the canal, which poses significant risks even for strong swimmers.
As the recovery operation continues, police are urging the public to steer clear of the area to allow emergency crews to work safely. More information, including the identity of the deceased, is expected once next of kin has been notified.
The incident remains under active investigation.
