Antonio Villaraigosa Brings Affordability Tour to Coachella Valley in Bid for Governor

Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa stopped in the Coachella Valley today as part of his campaign for California governor, bringing his “affordability tour” to Palm Springs and Palm Desert.

Villaraigosa met with voters face-to-face, including a visit to Rick’s Restaurant in Palm Springs, where he emphasized his vision for tackling California’s most pressing economic challenges. “We need a governor who is going to cut red tape, cut bureaucracy, and build again,” Villaraigosa said.

At the center of his campaign is addressing the state’s high cost of living. He noted that utility rates have risen nearly 60 percent in the last six years, alongside soaring housing and gas prices. “People can’t afford to live here. We need a governor who’s focused on that,” he said.

Villaraigosa also stressed the importance of infrastructure improvements, citing the Valley’s challenges with windstorms and flooding, and called for greater cooperation between the state, counties, and cities to address local issues.

Drawing on his long history of labor activism, the former mayor highlighted farmworkers’ rights, while also stressing support for farmers and the agricultural economy. “We can’t have farmworkers if we don’t have farmers,” he said.

As the Democratic field remains crowded, Villaraigosa is using his affordability tour to connect directly with Californians, positioning himself as a candidate focused on practical solutions and economic opportunity.
