Exercise Is Crucial for GLP-1 Users
Doctors say GLP-1 medications — the popular drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro — are changing the way many Americans approach weight loss. But experts warn: the injections alone aren’t enough.
Health specialists stress that pairing the medication with regular exercise — especially strength training — is critical for long-term success. That’s because while the shots help curb appetite and promote weight loss, they don’t distinguish between fat and muscle.
Research shows people on GLP-1 medications can lose a significant amount of muscle mass along with fat. And that loss of lean muscle can lower metabolism, weaken bones, and increase the risk of injury later in life.
Doctors recommend adding resistance training — like lifting weights or using bands — at least two to three times a week, along with aerobic exercise such as walking, cycling, or swimming. Not only does it help preserve muscle, but it can also improve energy, balance, and overall health.
Experts also say building muscle now can help keep weight off when people eventually stop taking the medication.
