La Quinta to Honor Marine Corporal Hunter Lopez Next Week

The City of La Quinta will hold a memorial vigil Tuesday evening to honor Marine Cpl. Hunter Lopez and fellow service members who were killed in the August 2021 Kabul airport attack in Afghanistan.

The vigil will take place August 26th at 7:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Campus, located near Washington Street and Calle Tampico. In a tribute to Lopez's passion for Star Wars, attendees are encouraged to bring lightsabers instead of traditional candles to create a visual display of remembrance.

Lopez was among 13 U.S. service members killed in a suicide bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport during the evacuation of American personnel and Afghan allies in August 2021. The attack occurred as thousands of people attempted to flee Afghanistan following the Taliban's takeover.
