State Department Pauses Work Visas for Foreign Truck Drivers

The State Department has temporarily paused issuing work visas for foreign commercial truck drivers. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the decision Thursday, saying the rising number of foreign drivers is “endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers.”

The announcement follows a deadly crash in Florida involving a truck driver accused of making an illegal U-turn. Federal authorities say the driver had entered the country illegally, prompting further scrutiny of how foreign drivers obtain credentials and work authorizations.

The American Trucking Association voiced support for the visa pause, citing safety concerns, though the organization has previously acknowledged an ongoing driver shortage nationwide. According to industry data, the shortage has strained supply chains in recent years, increasing demand for qualified drivers.

Rubio defended the move as necessary to protect both road safety and American jobs. “We cannot allow unsafe and illegal practices to put lives at risk while simultaneously displacing American workers,” he said.

The Department of Transportation confirmed it is investigating the Florida crash and will continue reviewing safety and compliance standards. Meanwhile, the State Department has not indicated how long the visa pause will remain in effect.

The policy shift comes at a time when lawmakers remain divided over balancing road safety, immigration, and the trucking industry’s labor needs.
