Trump’s DC Police Takeover Brings Drop in Crime, Surge in Immigration Arrests

Washington, DC is seeing a complicated picture after President Donald Trump’s recent move to take control of the city’s police force. A CNN analysis shows crime has dipped moderately since federal agencies took over, but immigration arrests have spiked dramatically.

In the week beginning August 12, property crime dropped about 19% and violent crime fell 17%, with robberies and car break-ins down more than 40%. However, not all categories improved — burglaries rose by 6% and assaults with dangerous weapons increased by 14%. Two murders have been reported since Trump signed the order, consistent with recent weekly trends.

The shift coincides with a massive presence of federal agents and ICE officers working alongside Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers. Federal officials reported that since August 7, 300 immigrants without legal status have been arrested — a more than tenfold jump from the average of about 12 per week. ICE agents have been seen trailing MPD officers, ready to intervene if individuals are flagged for immigration violations.

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson praised the initiative, saying the crime drop is “life-changing.” Critics, including DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, argue the true goal is targeting undocumented immigrants. A lawsuit filed by DC’s attorney general challenges Attorney General Pam Bondi’s order directing police to cooperate with ICE, though a judge has signaled Trump’s authority under the Home Rule Act may hold.

Viral videos of ICE agents tackling immigrants, breaking car windows, and conducting traffic checkpoints have intensified community outrage. Protests have broken out in some neighborhoods, while polls show about 80% of DC residents oppose Trump’s police takeover.

The Justice Department has also launched an investigation into whether MPD manipulated past crime data, adding another layer of controversy. Despite this, Trump has claimed a “public safety miracle,” pointing to no reported homicides in DC last week.

His emergency authority under the Home Rule Act is set to expire after 30 days, but Trump has suggested federal forces could remain longer. The future of DC’s policing remains uncertain as both crime statistics and immigration enforcement numbers continue to shape the debate.
