Kilmer Obrego-Garcia freed after wrongful detention, faces possible deportation to Uganda
Kilmer Obrego-Garcia has returned to his family in Maryland following his release from federal custody on Friday, ending a months-long ordeal that saw him wrongly detained and deported to El Salvador. He spent nearly half a year in prison there after being accused of gang involvement, an allegation his supporters and attorneys say was false.
His release was marked by an emotional reunion with family members, who had been separated from him for months. The case has drawn attention from immigration advocates who argue that Obrego’s detention highlights ongoing issues in the system.
Despite his return home, Obrego still faces uncertainty. Immigration authorities have indicated he could be deported to Uganda. Under federal law, ICE must provide 72 hours’ notice before removal, giving his attorneys time to petition an immigration judge. They plan to argue that Obrego faces a strong likelihood of persecution or torture if deported.
The case underscores the challenges and complexities of the U.S. immigration system, where one individual’s status can shift dramatically even after being cleared of previous allegations. For now, Obrego is reunited with his family but remains in a precarious legal position as his legal team prepares for the next battle.
