Cracker Barrel Backtracks After Logo Change Sparks Backlash

Cracker Barrel Backtracks After Logo Change Sparks Backlash

Cracker Barrel is walking back a major logo redesign after facing sharp backlash and a steep stock drop.

The country-themed restaurant chain, a staple of road trips for decades, introduced a minimalist logo last week that eliminated its iconic barrel and the seated figure long associated with the brand. The change sparked immediate outrage on social media, particularly among right-wing commentators, and sent Cracker Barrel’s stock down more than 12% in a single day.

“If the last few days have shown us anything, it’s how deeply people care about Cracker Barrel,” the company said Monday in a post on its website. “You’ve also shown us that we could’ve done a better job sharing who we are and who we’ll always be.”

Cracker Barrel clarified that “Uncle Herschel” — the old-timer figure created by Nashville designer Bill Holley in 1977 — is not disappearing completely. He will continue to appear on menus, including the “Uncle Herschel’s Favorite Breakfast Platter,” as well as on store interiors and roadside signs.

The uproar quickly grew into another flashpoint in the ongoing culture wars. Conservative voices such as Donald Trump Jr., Charlie Kirk, and Christopher Rufo criticized the redesign, with Rufo calling for “massive pressure against companies” considering what he described as “wokification.”

The controversy comes as Cracker Barrel pursues a $700 million transformation plan, which includes new advertising campaigns, refreshed menus, and seasonal food offerings. CEO Julie Felss Masino said in 2024 that updates were aimed at helping the chain “regain relevancy.”

Despite those efforts, some loyal customers were vocal about their disapproval. Actor James Woods posted that he would never return, writing, “Cracker Barrel was the only place I’d ever stop. No mob fights, a fun corny atmosphere, and delicious food when you’re hungry and tired.”

The company acknowledged it will not “always get everything right the first time” but pledged to continue “testing, learning and listening” to its guests and employees.
