Global Postal Services Halt Shipments to U.S. Ahead of New Tariffs
Postal services across the globe are halting shipments to the United States this week as new import tariffs take effect.
The changes stem from an executive order signed last month by President Donald Trump, which abolishes a long-standing trade exemption allowing goods valued under $800 to enter the U.S. duty-free. Starting Friday, all incoming parcels will face country-specific tariff rates.
The new rules have created widespread confusion and sparked concerns for international retailers and small business owners who rely heavily on American customers.
“The vast majority of my customer base is in the U.S. I can’t pass this on to my customers,” one business owner said. “As of last night, I’ve had to close my store completely.”
Postal services in Australia, India, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and parts of Europe have announced they will stop shipping parcels to the United States before the duty-free exemption officially ends. DHL, one of the world’s largest courier companies, confirmed it will no longer accept packages bound for the U.S. starting today.
Analysts say the move could have far-reaching consequences for both U.S. consumers and small international sellers, many of whom depend on cross-border e-commerce. The policy shift also raises questions about future trade flows and the potential strain on already fragile supply chains.
