Menendez Brothers Appeal Parole Denials in Superior Court

The attorney representing Lyle and Eric Menendez has filed an appeal in Superior Court, challenging the California parole board’s decision to deny the brothers’ release.

Attorney Mark Guerrego announced the appeal just days after both brothers were denied parole. He argues that his clients were not given a fair opportunity to present their cases during their hearings.

The parole board concluded last week that the Menendez brothers posed an unreasonable risk if released, despite more than three decades behind bars.

The brothers were convicted in 1996 of killing their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in the family’s Beverly Hills mansion in 1989. Their trials drew national attention, especially after they claimed years of abuse at the hands of their father — allegations prosecutors have long disputed, instead pointing to financial motives.

Although their most recent bids for freedom were denied, both Lyle, 57, and Eric, 54, will have another chance at parole in three years. Guerrego says he hopes the appeal will bring what he describes as long-overdue fairness to the process.
