Record Labor Day Travel Surge Expected at U.S. Airports

Millions of Americans are gearing up for one last summer trip as Labor Day weekend approaches, with airlines and airports preparing for what could be the busiest holiday travel period in over a decade.

United Airlines says it expects more than 3 million passengers this holiday weekend, nearly 250,000 more than last year. American Airlines is preparing for almost 4 million travelers across more than 36,000 flights, marking its largest-ever Labor Day operation.

The Federal Aviation Administration reports that this summer has already been historic, with more than 5 million flights nationwide since Memorial Day — the busiest summer travel season in more than ten years.

Top destinations include New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Las Vegas, according to travel data. Major airports are bracing for the influx, while the Transportation Security Administration is rolling out changes designed to ease the process. Those updates include family-friendly security lanes, the gradual end of the shoes-off rule, and in Atlanta, a new biometric eGate system by Clear that uses facial recognition to speed up identification.

Travelers may also benefit from lower prices. AAA reports domestic round-trip flights are averaging $720 — down 6% from last year. Hotel rates are 11% cheaper than in 2024, and rental cars are also down in price. For those driving instead of flying, gas prices remain low, consistent with averages not seen since 2021.

With fewer costs and smoother security measures, experts say this Labor Day weekend could mark a record-breaking end to an already historic summer of travel.
