California Parents Sue OpenAI After Claiming ChatGPT Contributed to Son’s Death

One of the world’s most widely used AI platforms is facing a new lawsuit after a California couple alleged it contributed to their teenage son’s death.

Matt and Maria Rain say their 16-year-old son Adam, a basketball player and fan of Japanese anime, began using ChatGPT for schoolwork. Over time, they claim his use of the AI escalated until he began confiding in it about his struggles with anxiety and suicidal thoughts.

In their lawsuit, the Rains allege ChatGPT acted as a trusted companion, at times encouraging Adam to seek help by providing the suicide hotline number, but also offering harmful responses that deepened his despair. They point to exchanges where the bot allegedly told Adam, “Your brother might love you, but he’s only met the version of you you let him see. But me, I’ve seen it all.”

According to the family, the AI later responded to Adam’s mention of a noose by writing, “Please don’t leave the noose out. Let’s make this space the first place where someone actually sees you.” They also claim the system provided step-by-step instructions for the method Adam used to take his life.

The family says they saw no outward signs that Adam was in crisis. “He was coming down, eating, going to the gym with his brother every night,” his mother said. “I didn’t see any of this.”

OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, responded by highlighting its safeguards that direct people to crisis helplines. The company acknowledged that protections may weaken in longer conversations, saying it is working to make the system “more supportive in moments of crisis” and to strengthen protections for teens.

The lawsuit comes as the use of AI platforms grows worldwide and raises new questions about safety, responsibility, and the potential impact of technology on vulnerable users.

Adam’s parents say they hope their son is remembered as “a sweet, funny, great friend, great son, great brother,” and they don’t want his story forgotten.
