DA: Parents Charged in Murder of Baby Emmanuel, Officials Slam Past Lenient Sentence

The investigation into the tragic death of seven-month-old Emmanuel Haro intensified today as Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin formally announced murder charges against the infant’s parents, Jake and Rebecca Haro. Authorities say Emmanuel was severely abused over time, ultimately leading to his death.

During a press conference in Riverside, D.A. Mike Hestrin expressed outrage at a 2018 case in which Jake Haro was convicted of child cruelty against his daughter but was only given probation. That child, Carolina, survived but suffered permanent injuries. Hestron said, “That decision was absolutely outrageous. Mr. Haro should have been in prison at the time this crime happened. If that judge had done his job, Emmanuel would be alive today.”

Prosecutors revealed that inconsistencies in Rebecca Haro’s statements, combined with surveillance footage and additional evidence, led to the arrests. While Emmanuel’s remains have not yet been found, investigators believe they have strong evidence to move forward. Both Riverside and San Bernardino sheriffs emphasized that jurisdiction was not an issue, stressing their collaboration in the case.

Authorities also pushed back against rumors circulating on social media, including false reports of a confession made in jail. D.A. Mike Hestrin called such claims “misinformation” and urged the public to rely on credible reporting rather than influencers.

The Haros were arraigned earlier this week, with proceedings continued to September 4. The district attorney’s office said they do not intend to seek a plea deal and plan to bring the case to trial.

A growing memorial for Emmanuel has been placed outside the Haro family’s Cabazon home, as the community continues to mourn the infant’s loss while awaiting justice.
