Nvidia Earnings Highlight Impact of US-China Trade War on AI Chipmaker
NEW YORK (CNN) — Nvidia will report earnings Wednesday afternoon, offering investors and analysts a fresh look at how U.S. trade restrictions with China are affecting one of the world’s most influential chipmakers.
In May, the company warned it could face an $8 billion revenue hit from export controls on shipments to China. Still, Wall Street analysts expect Nvidia to post around $46 billion in revenue and $24.7 billion in net income for the July quarter — gains of roughly 50% year-over-year, though slower than its record-setting growth last year.
Nvidia is seen as a bellwether for the broader artificial intelligence ecosystem. A slowdown could raise concerns of an “AI bubble,” a risk echoed earlier this month by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Yet optimism remains, with Wedbush analyst Dan Ives calling the upcoming results another “positive catalyst” for tech stocks.
The company’s relationship with China has been complicated by shifting U.S. policies. Earlier this year, the Trump administration blocked sales of Nvidia’s H20 AI chip to China, cutting off a market that accounted for 13% of its revenue. After losing billions from unfulfilled sales, Nvidia was later allowed to resume shipments under a new agreement requiring it and AMD to pay the U.S. government 15% of their China chip sales in exchange for export licenses.
CEO Jensen Huang has argued that restricting U.S. companies from selling to China only accelerates the development of Chinese alternatives, potentially weakening America’s edge in the global AI race. Reports suggest Nvidia is now developing a new China-specific AI chip, reportedly called the B30, designed to comply with both U.S. and Chinese requirements.
Despite the uncertainty, demand for Nvidia’s products remains strong, and analysts expect the company to modestly beat expectations and provide an upbeat outlook. Nvidia shares are up more than 30% this year, and the company became the world’s first public firm valued at $4 trillion in July.
