A stunt 18 months in the making brought traffic to a halt on the San Francisco Bay Bridge this weekend as Red Bull athlete and sky surfing pioneer Sean McCormack performed a dramatic leap from a helicopter.

The jaw-dropping jump began 5,000 feet above the bay. McCormack descended past the iconic bridge before landing safely on a barge minutes later. Video of the stunt, released by Red Bull, quickly went viral online.

To make the daring dive possible, traffic was stopped twice on the Bay Bridge early Saturday morning, with closures lasting about eight to ten minutes each, according to the California Highway Patrol. The San Francisco Film Commission confirmed Red Bull spent roughly $8,000 in city fees to carry out the stunt, though the total taxpayer cost has not yet been calculated. Crews were also delayed by weather, as heavy fog briefly raised doubts about whether the jump could go forward.

Reaction was mixed across the Bay Area. Some drivers said the short traffic delays were worth the once-in-a-lifetime spectacle, while others voiced frustration at not being notified in advance.

“This is great advertising for San Francisco,” one state official noted, adding that better communication with the public will be a priority for similar events in the future.
