CDC Vaccine Meeting Sparks Controversy After Director’s Ouster
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is moving forward with a vaccine advisory meeting just one day after its new director, Dr. Susan Monarez,, was removed from her role. Monarez, had only served a few weeks as director before being pushed out, sparking concern about stability and decision-making inside the agency.
Republican Senator Bill Cassidy says the meeting should not proceed, arguing that the agency is not following proper protocol in light of the leadership change.
Earlier this summer, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dismissed the CDC’s advisory panel and appointed eight new members. Sources say disagreements over those selections played a role in Monarez,’s removal.
The Biden administration has named Jim O’Neill, the Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services, as acting CDC director. During his confirmation hearings for HHS, O’Neill said he supports vaccines but also believes the federal government overreached during its coronavirus response.
The shakeup comes as the agency faces heightened scrutiny over its handling of both pandemic preparedness and vaccine policy. The upcoming advisory meeting is expected to play a key role in shaping future recommendations.
