TEDx Rancho Mirage Debuts with Local Voices and Big Ideas

TEDx talks returned to the Coachella Valley this month with a brand new event, TEDx Rancho Mirage, curated and hosted by Emmy-nominated writer Eric Cunningham. The event, held at the Rancho Mirage Library, marked the first TED-affiliated gathering in the desert in more than a decade.

Unlike the large-scale global TED conferences, TEDx events are independently organized, community-driven talks designed to highlight local voices and ideas. For this debut, Cunningham brought together five speakers, all with ties to the Valley, who addressed a wide range of topics including artificial intelligence, theater education, luxury hospitality, and the region’s potential for a startup boom.

One highlight came from speaker James V. Lee, who laid out why the Coachella Valley could be on the brink of becoming a startup hub. Another memorable moment was delivered by Julie Olive, general manager of Sensei Porcupine Creek, who explained that true luxury in hospitality comes down to small but meaningful touches — like the folded triangle in a roll of toilet paper, a symbol of care and thoughtfulness.

Cunningham says the response has been strong, with attendees already expressing interest in speaking at or helping to organize next year’s event. He envisions building a “brain trust” of community members passionate about sharing big ideas, turning TEDx Rancho Mirage into an annual tradition.

Reflecting on the experience, Cunningham added that he believes anyone is capable of delivering a TEDx talk as long as they speak from passion. He shared that one topic he hopes to see explored more is imposter syndrome — a struggle he says many face daily, often while pursuing creative or professional goals.
