Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman Star in "The Roses" Remake
A new adaptation of the 1989 dark comedy "The War of the Roses" arrives in theaters this weekend, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. Simply titled "The Roses," the film reimagines the original story of a marriage's bitter dissolution as what the actors describe as a "deliciously biting satire on marriage."
The casting came together organically, with Cumberbatch and Colman having been longtime friends who sought an opportunity to collaborate. According to the actors, the script was specifically written for them, with most of the original dialogue remaining intact from the first draft.
The remake maintains the original's focus on a bitter custody battle over their shared home, with both actors portraying characters that audiences will find relatable despite their escalating conflict.
"The Roses" opens in theaters nationwide this weekend.
