CBD Products for Pets: Growing Interest Amid Regulatory Concerns

Veterinarians are reporting increased requests from pet owners seeking CBD products derived from marijuana plants for their animals, marking a shift in a treatment area that was previously rarely discussed in clinical settings.

Dr. David Jeffrey of El Paseo Animal Hospital in Palm Desert says his practice has seen a sharp rise in pet owners asking about CBD treatments for various conditions. Many owners arrive having researched CBD independently and wanting to try the products for their pets.

Regulatory Gap Raises Safety Concerns

The primary concern among veterinarians is the lack of FDA regulation for pet CBD products. Unlike traditional veterinary medications, CBD supplements fall outside FDA oversight, meaning manufacturers can make label claims that may not match the actual product contents.

The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine has issued warning letters to companies promoting CBD pet products that have not been approved as safe or effective for animal use.

Traditional Pain Management Remains Standard

Currently, veterinarians rely on established pain medications for pet treatment. Dr. Jeffrey notes that conventional pain relievers like Galloprant, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, and Labrella, an injectable medication for chronic pain and arthritis, remain the standard treatments despite potential long-term side effects.

Professional Consultation Recommended

Veterinary professionals emphasize the importance of consulting with a licensed veterinarian before introducing any CBD products to a pet's treatment regimen, particularly given the unregulated nature of the supplement market and varying evidence supporting CBD use for different animal health conditions.
