Colman Domingo Responds to Criticism Over Drag Role in Sabrina Carpenter’s Music Video
Actor Colman Domingo is addressing criticism over his latest role, appearing in drag in pop star Sabrina Carpenter’s new music video.
The Emmy winner makes a cameo in Carpenter’s video, which draws inspiration from the cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” The campy collaboration shows the two having fun on set, but not everyone welcomed the performance.
In response to critics, Domingo shared a message on social media reminding fans that his appearance was just another role. “It’s a character. Like all the characters I play. Calm down brother. Enjoy the video and the fun that it possesses. Dance it out! It ain’t that deep,” he wrote. He added a well-known quote from “RuPaul’s Drag Race” host RuPaul: “We are born naked and everything else is drag.”
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” released in 1975, has long been a cultural touchstone, celebrated for its gender-fluid characters, interactive screenings, and devoted fan base. Carpenter’s new video taps into that same spirit of playful expression.
Domingo, who has built a career portraying a wide range of characters across film, television, and stage, made it clear he’s unfazed by the pushback. Instead, he encouraged fans to embrace the performance for what it was meant to be: entertainment.
