Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst Will Not Seek Reelection, Opening Key 2026 Senate Race

Iowa Republican Sen. Joni Ernst has decided not to seek reelection to a third term, according to sources familiar with her plans. The 55-year-old senator, who has been weighing the decision for months, is expected to make her announcement public next week.

Ernst’s departure creates a wide-open Senate contest in Iowa. GOP officials say Rep. Ashley Hinson is preparing to launch a campaign and is viewed as a strong Republican candidate.

On the Democratic side, several contenders have already entered the race, including state Rep. Josh Turek, a Paralympic wheelchair basketball player; state Sen. Zach Wahls; Knoxville Chamber of Commerce executive director Nathan Sage; and Des Moines School Board chair Jackie Norris.

Ernst, first elected in 2014, gained national attention with her promise to cut government spending under the slogan “Make ’em squeal.” But she has at times struggled to navigate the GOP’s shift under Donald Trump, balancing support for his base with concerns from more moderate voters.

Her political career has not been without controversy. Ernst drew backlash after telling a constituent worried about Medicaid cuts that “we are all going to die.”

The battle for Iowa’s open Senate seat comes as both parties gear up for the 2026 midterm elections. While Republicans have dominated Iowa in recent cycles — Trump carried the state by 13 points in 2024 — Democrats see recent special election wins as signs of potential momentum.

National Democrats are eyeing multiple Senate seats as part of their strategy to flip control of the chamber. Beyond Iowa, the party is focused on North Carolina, Maine, Ohio, and Texas.

With Ernst stepping aside, Iowa will now play a pivotal role in shaping the Senate majority in 2026.
