New Tariffs on Coffee Imports Drive Up Prices for Small Businesses

Tariffs on imported coffee beans that took effect earlier in August are forcing businesses to raise prices, with costs being passed directly to consumers.

The new trade measures affect nearly all coffee consumed in the United States, as 99% of coffee Americans drink is imported. Tariffs range up to 50% depending on the country of origin.

Local coffee shop owners report they're already feeling the impact, with some facing additional costs of 10% or more on imported beans. The tariffs come as coffee prices had already risen more than 14% before the new measures took effect.

Business owners say they have little choice but to pass the increased costs on to customers, adding to existing inflationary pressures on food and beverage prices.
