Southwest Airlines Adds Cockpit Barriers on New Planes for In-Flight Safety

Southwest Airlines has begun flying new planes equipped with an added layer of cockpit protection, marking one of the first U.S. carriers to roll out the security feature.

The airline confirmed that its first Boeing 737 with a retractable “secondary barrier” entered service over Labor Day weekend. The barrier, which resembles a gate rather than a solid door, is designed to shield the cockpit whenever pilots must open the door during flight, such as when accessing the lavatory.

The change follows a 2023 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rule requiring secondary barriers on all new commercial aircraft starting this year. Southwest agreed to delay the rule’s implementation by one year but has now opted to begin early adoption.

“For Southwest, this was the right decision,” the airline said in a statement, adding that its safety management system prioritizes proactive measures to strengthen in-flight security.

The push for cockpit barriers dates back to the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when aviation labor unions argued they were necessary to protect pilots and passengers during vulnerable moments.

Southwest confirmed that every new aircraft it receives will come with the retractable barrier installed. At present, there is no certified method to retrofit older planes with the system, though the airline says it is in discussions with Boeing and the FAA about future options.

Currently, airlines rely on procedures like blocking the aisle with a beverage cart whenever pilots open the cockpit door. The new barrier provides an added layer of defense without relying solely on crew coordination.
