Trump Administration Plans Major Immigration Enforcement Operation in Chicago
The Trump administration is moving forward with plans to launch a large-scale immigration enforcement operation in Chicago, despite strong opposition from Illinois officials and city leaders.
Federal sources say the operation could begin within days and may involve a surge of federal agents as well as the National Guard. The effort builds on ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity across Illinois and other states, but officials say additional resources will be deployed to Chicago.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized crime levels in Chicago, issuing a direct warning to Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker in a recent social media post: address the city’s problems or the federal government will intervene. The president’s remarks have fueled debate, with critics accusing him of singling out Democratic-led cities while ignoring violent crime in Republican-controlled states.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson pushed back by signing an executive order over the weekend that blocks cooperation between the Chicago Police Department and federal military personnel on immigration enforcement and patrols. “This order affirms that the Chicago Police Department will not collaborate with military personnel on police patrols or civil immigration enforcement,” Johnson said.
Supporters of the president argue that strong immigration enforcement was a central promise of his campaign and remains a mandate from voters. Critics, however, contend that the crackdown undermines local authority and could escalate tensions between communities and law enforcement.
As both sides brace for the next step, Chicago has become the latest flashpoint in the national debate over immigration and public safety.
