Allergy Nasal Spray Azelastine Shows Promise in Preventing COVID-19 Infections
A familiar over-the-counter allergy nasal spray—azelastine—may offer more than congestion relief, new clinical trial results suggest.
A recent randomized, double-blind phase 2 trial involving 450 participants found that those using azelastine nasal spray had significantly lower COVID-19 infection rates—2.2% versus 6.7% in the placebo group. Conducted in Germany, the study also noted reduced symptom duration and fewer confirmed respiratory infections, including rhinovirus.
Azelastine, long used safely for allergic rhinitis, has demonstrated antiviral properties against flu, RSV, and now SARS-CoV-2. Prior research shows it effectively reduces viral load in COVID-19 cases and may slow the progression of infection.
However, researchers caution that the study’s participants were mostly young, healthy adults, so the findings may not apply broadly. Larger and more diverse trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness and broader applicability.
Given its accessibility, safety profile, and ease of use, azelastine nasal spray could eventually become a useful supplemental preventive tool—especially during periods of high viral transmission or before large gatherings.
