Crypto Fitz Explains Ethereum: Digital Silver of the Crypto World
Ethereum, launched in 2015, is now the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, just behind Bitcoin. But while the two are often compared, they serve very different roles in the digital economy.
Crypto Fitz explains that Bitcoin is considered “digital gold” — a store of value with a capped supply of 21 million coins. Its primary use has been peer-to-peer transactions and as a hedge against inflation. With a market cap just under $2 trillion, Bitcoin remains the dominant force in crypto.
Ethereum, by contrast, is often referred to as “digital silver.” Its market cap is roughly $350 billion, making it a distant but solid number two in the crypto ecosystem. Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum was designed not just as a currency, but as a computer protocol that enables decentralized applications through the use of smart contracts.
“Ethereum is really a fascinating computer protocol technology,” Crypto Fitz explained. “Smart contracts mean that when two people agree on a deal, the terms are built directly into the code. As the conditions are met, the contract automatically executes, ensuring payments are processed without disputes.”
This innovation has positioned Ethereum as the foundation for decentralized finance (DeFi), NFTs, and countless blockchain-based applications.
As Crypto Fitz summed up, “You can look at it like silver compared to gold. Bitcoin, digital gold. Ethereum, digital silver.”
