Kristi Noem Confirms Expanded ICE Operations in Major Cities

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has confirmed plans to expand Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in several major cities.

The announcement follows pushback from Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who has threatened legal action against any surge of federal law enforcement or National Guard troops in his city. Johnson also signed an executive order directing Chicago’s legal department to explore options to counter potential federal deployments.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration directed federal officers and ICE employees to assist local police in Washington, D.C., as part of crime-fighting operations. That effort included the deployment of thousands of National Guard troops to help lower crime rates in the nation’s capital.

The expansion of ICE operations is expected to draw further debate between federal officials and local leaders over immigration enforcement and the role of federal resources in city policing.
