New Community Marketplace ‘The Place’ Opens in Downtown Indio
Downtown Indio has a new hub for small businesses and community connection. The Place, also known as “a place to be,” is now open, housing more than 100 different brands under one roof.
The marketplace features a wide range of offerings, from jewelry and churros to Swedish electronics, reflecting both local creativity and international influence.
Nicole Masoth, co-owner of the project, says The Place is part of the city’s effort to revitalize downtown Indio. “The intention is to first and foremost contribute to development versus displacement,” she explained. “As Indio has more and more resources, it’s about giving back to the community.”
For local business owners, the project provides an opportunity to grow. Sarai Gutierrez, who started her brand online, says this was exactly the kind of chance she was looking for. “When the business structure of this was presented to me, I thought it was a great idea. I knew I wanted to be a part of something like this,” she said.
That opportunity extends beyond local brands. Samael Orozco, a sales associate representing a Swedish company, says the marketplace brings together creativity and self-expression in ways that feel fresh for the Coachella Valley.
Shoppers say the project already feels like more than just a place to buy goods. One visitor described it as inspiring to see what younger people in the East Valley are building. “I think of these valleys being somewhat dormant, and they’re really working on it,” they said.
For those behind the project, that sense of connection is the true goal — creating a space that allows businesses and the community to grow together.
