Demi Moore Praises Emma Heming Willis for Strength Amid Bruce Willis’ Dementia Battle
Demi Moore is speaking out in support of Bruce Willis’ wife, Emma Heming Willis, as the family continues to navigate the actor’s health challenges.
In a conversation on Oprah Winfrey’s podcast, Moore reflected on the complexities of her blended family and the strength Heming Willis has shown while caring for Willis, who is living with frontotemporal dementia. Moore and Willis were married from 1987 to 2000 and share three daughters, while Heming Willis, whom Willis married in 2009, is raising their two younger daughters, Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11.
Moore said the burden of care has largely fallen on Heming Willis. “So much fell on Emma to really figure this whole thing out,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of self-care for caregivers. “If they don’t put that time into making sure that they’re okay, then they can’t show up for anyone else.”
Her comments followed Heming Willis’ appearance in a special with ABC’s Diane Sawyer, “Emma & Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey,” where she revealed the difficult decision to move Willis into a one-story home for round-the-clock care.
Moore described Heming Willis as compassionate and courageous. “There’s no way that anybody could have anticipated where this was going to go and I really think she’s done a masterful job,” Moore said. “She’s had equal amounts of fear and strength and courage in navigating this.”
The actress also reflected on how hard it has been to watch Willis’ decline. “It’s hard to see somebody who was so vibrant and strong and so directed shift into this other part of themselves,” she said, adding that her approach has been to “meet them where they’re at.”
Heming Willis’ book, “The Unexpected Journey,” which details the family’s experience with frontotemporal dementia, is set to be released on September 9. Moore said she believes it will provide invaluable guidance and support to others facing similar struggles.
