Judge Rules Trump Administration Illegally Deployed National Guard to Los Angeles

A federal judge in California has ruled that the Trump administration acted unlawfully when it deployed the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles earlier this year. The ruling determined that the move violated the Posse Comitatus Act, a law that prohibits the use of the U.S. military as a domestic police force without authorization from Congress.

In June, the administration ordered 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines into the city following large-scale protests over the president’s immigration policies. The decision sparked immediate controversy, with state officials questioning whether the deployment exceeded federal authority.

On Tuesday, the judge ruled that the mobilization was unconstitutional and ordered the administration to halt the use of military forces in enforcing or assisting in the enforcement of federal law. The ruling also returned control of the remaining troops to California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The decision marks a significant legal setback for the White House and reinforces long-standing limits on military involvement in domestic affairs. It also underscores tensions between the federal government and California state leadership over issues of immigration policy and civil rights.
