Americans Lack Disaster Preparedness Despite Recognizing Risks
September marks National Preparedness Month, highlighting a significant gap between Americans' awareness of emergency risks and their actual preparedness levels.
A survey by Talker Research reveals that while 90% of Americans consider preparation for extreme weather events critical, only 46% have established an emergency plan. The disconnect becomes more pronounced when examining specific preparations: fewer than one-third of respondents have considered purchasing generators, stockpiling extra supplies, or maintaining fuel reserves.
The survey findings underscore widespread unpreparedness across the country as natural disasters become increasingly frequent and severe. Emergency management experts emphasize that effective disaster planning requires understanding local risks and appropriate response protocols for each potential emergency type.
Essential preparedness steps include:
Developing a family emergency plan tailored to local disaster risks
Building emergency kits containing at least one week's worth of essential supplies
Stockpiling adequate food, water, medications, and clothing for all family members
Considering backup power sources and fuel storage where appropriate
