Parents Plead Not Guilty in Murder of 7-Month-Old Emmanuel Haro
The parents of 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro were back in court today in Riverside, where both entered not guilty pleas to murder charges. Jake and Rebecca Haro are accused of killing their son, who was first reported missing on August 14 outside a Big Five sporting goods store in Yucaipa.
Twenty days after that report, prosecutors charged both parents with murder with malice. Today, the couple appeared before a judge at the Riverside Hall of Justice for their arraignment. Jake Haro continues to be represented by Riverside County public defenders Paulette Garth Waite and Alison Lowe, while Rebecca Haro is represented by attorney Jeff Moore—best known for previously defending Louise Turpin in the infamous Perris child abuse case.
Moore argued the case should be transferred to the Banning courthouse, citing jurisdiction rules. However, the judge said a formal motion would need to be filed before any decision is made.
The court scheduled the next hearing for September 16, a felony settlement conference where prosecutors and defense attorneys will review evidence and outline their strategies. Preliminary hearings are slated to begin the following day, September 17.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with many community members expressing heartbreak over the tragic death. Advocates say the proceedings highlight both the fragility of child welfare and the gravity of the charges against the parents.
Jake and Rebecca Haro remain in custody as they await the upcoming hearings.
