Trump Weighs Sending Military to Patrol New Orleans Streets, City Leaders Push Back

Democratic city leaders in New Orleans are pushing back against President Donald Trump’s suggestion that the military could be deployed to patrol city streets. The proposal, which Trump raised this week, would make New Orleans the first Democratic-led city in a Republican-controlled state to see such a federal move.

Trump indicated he is weighing whether to send troops to Chicago or New Orleans, praising Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, a Republican, for supporting the idea. Trump cited crime concerns, though city officials counter that violent crime has been trending downward, with recent statistics showing a 27% drop in homicides, a 15% decline in reported rapes, and a 16.5% reduction in robberies.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, who faces term limits and was recently indicted in an unrelated case, did not directly respond to the president’s comments. However, City Councilmember and mayoral candidate Helena Moreno called Trump’s plan “an attack on certain cities,” accusing the administration of politicizing public safety.

Support from Republican leaders has been strong. Governor Landry welcomed Trump’s offer, linking it to his own crime crackdown efforts in New Orleans. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill also endorsed the plan, citing past failures of local leadership.

Still, local officials and community leaders warn against militarizing the city. Marlon Defillo, a former assistant superintendent with the New Orleans Police Department, said law enforcement is already making progress and that federal partners have been helpful during major events. Councilmember Lesli Harris and Congressman Troy A. Carter both rejected the proposal, calling it a political stunt that risks undermining the city’s autonomy.

Community advocates echo that concern, noting that sending in troops without addressing root causes like poverty and job creation would not solve long-term problems.
