Fighting Hunger: Local Food Bank Steps Up During Hunger Action Month

All of September is recognized as Hunger Action Month, a nationwide campaign designed to raise awareness and fight the ongoing issue of food insecurity in the United States. And while the month itself shines a light on the issue, today holds extra significance—it’s also National Food Bank Day. At the Cathedral City Senior Center, a local food bank is showing what it means to serve with compassion. Instead of handing out pre-packed food boxes, the center operates what it proudly calls a "shopping-style food bank." This model allows families to choose the items they need, offering both sustenance and dignity.

With over 50 dedicated volunteers, the heart of the operation beats strong. Vick Ide, Chief Operating Officer, emphasizes that today is not only about food—but about community and gratitude.

“It’s a day not only to recognize the great work that food banks do and the importance of them in the community,” Eyde says, “but it's also a day to recognize our volunteers. Our food bank is really unique. We have 51 volunteers that come in every single Monday. They donate about 16,000 hours every year to the food bank.”

Every Monday, these volunteers transform the food bank’s main room into a makeshift grocery store. No identification or paperwork is required. Eyde makes it clear:

“We don't ask any questions, we don't have any requirements, no ID is requested. If you need food, just come on down and you can get food.”

Food distribution takes place every Monday, with gates opening at 7:00 AM and doors at 8:30 AM. The model promotes both accessibility and respect—two things many in need often go without.

If you're looking for a way to give back during Hunger Action Month, this food bank is a great place to start. For more information on how to donate or volunteer, visit cathedralcity.org.
