California Minimum Wage Increasing to $16.90 in 2026
California’s minimum wage is set to rise again, beginning January 1, 2026. The state Department of Finance announced the increase this week after reviewing annual inflation data, as required by law.
With the Consumer Price Index showing a 2.49% rise this year, the minimum wage will increase from $16.50 to $16.90 an hour. While the adjustment amounts to just 40 cents per hour, it is part of an ongoing effort to keep wages aligned with the cost of living.
Some financial advisors warn that the increase could put additional pressure on small businesses already managing tight budgets. “It’s really painful because now the small business will have to pay additional to those employees,” one advisor explained. “They also have to pay more in workers’ comp, payroll taxes, and disability. That actually will make small businesses suffer more financially.”
State officials, however, emphasize that the incremental change helps maintain balance between fair wages for workers and economic sustainability. They describe the latest increase as modest, but necessary, to ensure wages remain responsive to inflation trends.
The new minimum wage will take effect statewide on January 1, 2026.
